Origin: Abruzzo, Italy
Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is an intense red wine that stands up to the flavourful cuisine of Abruzzo. Made from the grape variety of the same name, it is a low-tannin wine often with an unmistakable waft of sea air. It has demonstrated incredible versatility in yielding important wines in both traditional and modern styles. The best Montepulcianos can evolve positively to age twenty and beyond with no problems whatsoever. Like Barbera, Montepulciano seems to be especially well-suited to French oak, as the skins have very little tannic material.
Cataldi Madonna, founded in the 1920s at a time when everyone in the region was selling wine in bulk, was one of the first producers in Abruzzo to bottle their wine. The Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC Tonì is their top wine and it’s wonderfully intense and polished. Brilliant ruby red. Rich, with dark fruit and balanced oak notes. Warm, medium in body, with elegant tannins and pleasant acidity that gives this wine a fresh character.
Aged for 12 months in 225 L French oak, followed by 18 months in bottle.
