Origin: Basilicata, Italy
Basilicata makes only small quantities of wine and indeed there is an even more limited production of high quality wines, Aglianico del Vulture DOC being one of those. Aglianico del Vulture DOC is made from the red grape of that name also grown in Campania, the region of Naples. Here in Basilicata it is grown in vineyards around the extinct Vulture volcano and produces astonishingly lush-textured wines, often garnet-colored with high tannins and acidity. Sometimes harsh when young, after some ageing they soften and reveal lovely plummy flavours with a hint of chocolate. Il Nibbio Grigio is dark ruby red with purple hints. The sensory profile of this wine is defined by dark fruit (blackberry, blueberry, plum and cherry), spicy nuances (vanilla, black pepper and licorice) all wrapped by hints of chocolate. Solid tannins and acidity. Long finish with aftertaste of berries and licorice. Aged in French oak barrels (barriques). Best served at about 18°C.
