In his continuous search for high-quality indigenous grape varieties, this time Edmond brings to your table a top-notch Cesanese di Affile. Cesanese is a grape variety that covers part of the hilly land south-east of Rome, which is undoubtedly this variety's spiritual home. However, it is also grown in other parts of Italy, notably Umbria and Campania. Cesanese is also known for the challenges it poses in the vineyard, as the grapes ripen extremely late and sometimes do not reach full phenolic ripeness, thus resulting in thin, watery wines. When made well with low-yielding cultivars, as in the case of Capozzano, Cesanese can instead produce rich, medium-bodied wines. Vito Formiconi and his family are quality-focused wine makers who produce less than 4,000 bottles per year. The Riserva "Capozzano" is a gem, an elegant, rounded wine which perfectly expresses its terroir. Ruby red with purple hints. Ripe berries, cigar box, mildly spicy and floral. Ample and rich, medium in body, with soft tannins and long finish. Capozzano 2013 has scooped the Quattro Viti AIS (highest score by the Italian Sommeliers Association) as well as the 5 Grappoli Bibenda (highest score by the Italian Sommeliers Foundation). Aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (barriques), followed by 8 months in bottle. Best served at 16-18° C.
