Umbrian wines have only just begun trickling into the mainstream wine enthusiasts' choices, primarily as a result of the recognition of the region's signature Sagrantino wines, considered fairly new red wines despite their long history. The cultivation of Montefalco's indigenous grape variety Sagrantino dates back to 1549, when the Benedictine monks used it to create a sacramental sweet wine.
Prova d'Autore is a red wine from a selection of the best Sagrantino (40%), Sangiovese (30%) and Montepulciano (30%) grapes grown in the Cantina Roccafiore's vineyards around Todi.
Ruby red colour with dark garnet undertones. Powerful nose made of ripe fruit, jam, delicate vanilla aromas conferred by ageing woods, hints of cocoa, tobacco and leather. Elegant on the palate with a distinct spicy bouquet, well balanced between volume and smoothness, warmth and crispness, austerity and richness.
Aged in new and second passage French barriques for about 24 months and for further 6 months in the bottle.
Ideal pairing with savoury pasta dishes, medium-aged cheeses like Pecorino, black truffles and grilled meat.
Best served at about 18-20 °C.
