Puglia is responsible for one of the largest annual productions of any of Italy's wine regions. Only a relatively small proportion of this is of top quality standard, however.
The extreme southeastern province of Salento is where the finest Apulian reds come from. Here the spicy and exciting Negroamaro is the claim to fame. Some Negroamaro is also grown in California and Australia but this grape variety has remained closely associated with the Puglia region for more than 1500 years, conversely to the Primitivo grape which has been identified as the ancestor of the Zinfandel grape extensively grown in California, USA since mid-19th century.
Negroamaro is a mildly aromatic, dark-skinned red grape variety, valued for its deep dark color, medium-full tannins and flavours of dark berries. It is a relatively drought-hardy variety therefore not troubled by the limited rainfall of the region.
Primitivo is a dark-skinned grape known for producing inky, tannic wines. A certain bitterness is often found in Primitivo grapes which, combined with its mouth-puckering tannins, means that it needs a few years in either bottle or barrel.
The NAUNA IGT Salento 2015 is a blend of Negroamaro (60%) and Primitivo (40%) crafted with grapes coming from old vineyards implanted in the early 1960s and trained with the millennial Apulian training system called Alberello. At Schola Sarmenti, vineyards are taken care of without any chemical fertilizer or weed killers. Hand-harvested, only the best grape bunches make their way to the winery, a structure from the 1800s that has recently been renovated.
NAUNA is an intense, dark red wine, with ripe fruit aromas, hints of tobacco and cocoa and balsamic whiffs. On the palate, a surge of ripe fruit that gives way to chocolate and tobacco flavours and a well-balanced, long finish.
Aged for 9 months in French oak casks (tonneaux), followed by 10 months in bottle before release.
Nauna 2014 was rated 91/100 points by Wine Spectator. We are confident that the newly released 2015 vintage will also find favour with wine experts and professionals.
