Most of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region is renowned for its white wine production, however within the DOC Colli Orientali del Friuli (the Eastern Hills) the reds also shine. The varietal gems are led by Refosco, which delivers wines with incredible blackberry fruit intensity that is underpinned by a strong line of minerality.
Vineyards here enjoy a certain altitude and are terraced on gently rolling hills. Thanks to natural climatic shelter provided by the Julian Prealps, the area is protected from the cold north winds. Higher planting densities, older vines and the continental climate also lead to lower yields, which lead to a greater flavour concentration and higher-quality wines.
Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso (Refosco of the Red Stems) is probably Friuli Venezia Giulia's best-known red grape variety. It differentiates from all other Refoscos because of its stalk, which reddens once the grapes are fully ripe, and it is by consensus held to make the best wines. These are wines of great complexity and the tannins can be much more aggressive and astringent than those of wines made with other Refoscos.
The Moschioni family has been making wine in their tiny estate since 1900. About 20 years ago, Michele Moschioni chose to go against the tide, that is, to make only red wines in a territory of great whites. Today, his wines are recognised internationally as outstanding red wines. "Consumers who want to understand the potential of indigenous varieties owe it to themselves to check out the stunning wines of Michele Moschioni." (Robert Parker Jr.).
Michele Moschioni crafts hand-made, natural wines. Starting from organically grown grapes, his wines are fermented using only natural yeasts and they see no fining or filtration prior to being bottled in accordance with the lunar phases. In short, his wines are among the most natural, unmanipulated wines one may encounter from anywhere in the world.
