Nero d'Avola is the most widely planted red grape variety in Sicily and, as its name suggests, it comes from Avola in the south-east of the island where its cultivation was started several hundred years ago.
It used to be mainly grown for export, to bulk up weedier northern reds. However, when cultivated to yield a low quantity of fruit per vine this grape variety is capable of expressing elegant, age-worthy wines. Most Nero d'Avola wines will age confidently for 10 years or more.
Wines made from Nero d'Avola are among the full-bodied wines of the world and they are known for their superbly bold fruit-driven flavours that range from black cherry to prune. Moderately high acidity and smooth, "sweet" tannins complete the characteristics of these wines.
The NeroBaronj is a wonderful example of high-end, single-vineyard Nero d'Avola from an award-winning producer: Gulfi. Their wines, which come from old vines grown in the most ancient and well-known districts of Pachino and Val di Noto, are authentic expressions of the territory that they originate from, as they are the result of organic vine growing combined with non-invasive wine-making techniques.
Aged in small oak casks (barriques) for at least 12 months.
